A government program to promote energy efficiency is called the Energy Company Obligation (ECO). ECO seeks to combat fuel poverty and contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions. For those who meet the requirements, grants are offered with the goal of improving home energy efficiency and therefore lowering energy costs. The program requires energy providers to provide payments for energy efficiency, and the government will impose hefty fines on them if they don’t reduce carbon emissions as required..
This funding program’s fourth phase began in July 2022 and will last until March 2026. Energy corporations must invest a staggering £4 billion in order to avoid the fines. The good news is that grants are highly large if you qualify and may be available to you if you own your home or are a renter of a private or housing association.
There are six ways to qualify yourself, and your property must also be eligible in order for you to proceed. According to Ofgem’s most recent qualifying requirements, inefficient heating and insulation must often be installed in order to receive a subsidy and achieve a “complete project score.”
Eligibility Criteria
If you or anyone in your household receives any of the following benefits, then you will be automatically eligible for an ECO grant:
- Child Tax Credit
- Child Benefit
- Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) – Income Based
- Housing Benefit – new eligible benefit
- Income Support
- Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) – Income Based
- Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
- Pension Credit Savings Credit – new eligible benefit
- Working Tax Credit
- Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) – Income Based
- Universal Credit
You must show proof that you—or a member of your household—received the benefit in order to be eligible for a grant. If you receive one of these benefits, there are no income requirements except child benefits.
How to apply for a grant, including what documentation you need to provide
To apply for a grant you must live at the property and be responsible for paying the energy bills. You will need to provide evidence of eligibility e.g. a claim letter. If you only claim Child Benefits, you must provide proof of income (such as bank statements, payslips, P60s, or benefits letters).
The benefits of receiving a grant, including how it can help with your energy bills
Receiving a grant can help reduce your energy bills by making your home more energy efficient. It can also help to improve the comfort of your home and make it easier to heat. Any assistance with your energy expenses is welcome as energy prices are on the rise.
When will the grants be distributed and how long will they be available
The grants will be available from July 2022 until March 2026.
